A short Game Boy game about expectations, queer identity, and the possibility of dreaming bigger.

Fishin' for Average Caucasian Boyfriends is a semi-autobiographical Game Boy game about expectations, queerness, and the possibility of dreaming bigger.
Based on a true conversation with my mom at a seafood restaurant, the game allows players to make the choice to fish–or not...
What if we refuse to play the game?
This game was originally developed as part of FREEPLAY! A queer video games exhibit in Richmond, VA in January 2024.
Built with GB Studio and playable for free on itch.io, the game was also adapted into a real, working Game Boy cartridge (complete with an instructions manual and holographic packaging) and sold as an artist edition on Metalabel in summer of 2025.

In January 2027, an edition of the piece was also donated into collections of the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY.
Special thanks to MeeNa Ko and Danielle Paterson for support at various stages of this project! <3
